Claire Thomson, PhD, is a Senior Lecturer in Scandinavian Film at UCL, where she teaches in the Department of Scandinavian Studies and the graduate programme in Film Studies. She has published widely on Danish cinema and literature.

From 1945 the short film format was used as a means of promoting Denmark abroad as a progressive society and as a producer of high quality goods.

The talk explores the commissioning, production, circulation and reception of the "Social Denmark" films

A particularly interesting example of this kind of filmmaking is the so-called Social Denmark series, a set of five English-language shorts developed immediately after World War II with the aim of marketing Denmark abroad as a progressive, democratic nation.

The talk explores the commissioning, production, circulation and reception of the Social Denmark films.
